It’s pretty unusual that the first day of summer around here is actually “summerish,” but today sure is! It did start out cool (John said he could see his—and the weenie dogs’—breath when he got up this morning and built a fire on the deck. However, that was around 5:00 a.m.
This afternoon, it is toasty on the waterside of the Harstine house deck! (And due to be toastier tomorrow). It’s glorious!
John’s been down here working on the house all week and he sent me some photos (pitchers) that one of our neighbors took from his boat. Awesomesauce! (Definitely click the photos to embiggen!)
Then today, John took a photo of the back of the house from our next door neighbors’ driveway:
You can see in the photos taken from the water (especially the up-close one) that the right front pole hadn’t been stained yet. Here’s another shot that shows the gray outlier pole:
John worked on that this morning, and oh. What a job! He first uses his hand-planer up and down and all around the pole to peel off the gray outer layer (you wouldn’t believe how much sawdust that generates!) and then sands it with his hand-sander (up and down and all around). He had to remove the top and bottom deck rails to access areas on the back side…which means he was working on the precipice of the deck with a 30-foot-drop one wrong step or tumble off the ladder away. Ugh. I’ve been a wreck knowing he was working on these, and maybe because I was there or maybe because he felt a little nervous himself, he did this:
Yay for fall protection!
After all of that, he stained it. And now the poles match!
Just wow, what a gorgeous day.
